The Walter Trumbauer Secondary Theatre Festival
“Trumbauer,” as it’s affectionately known, is an annual Alabama secondary theatre festival, one of the largest such events in the southeast region. Now in its 69th year, the festival is named after Walter Trumbauer, a former theatre professor at The University of Montevallo who inspired and taught students in the field of speech and theatre for many years. “Trumbauer” celebrates the high school theatre experience.
Students from 9th through 12th grades compete in 28 individual performance and/or technical theatre events (called IE’s). Their school may also compete with a one-act play or ensemble piece. Students first compete in one of six district festivals. If the students receive a “superior” from their District IE judges, then they will proceed to State Trumbauer where they will compete against students from all districts. The One-Act Play Festival highlights the top district plays. Students receive IE Awards and the winning one-act will represent Alabama at SETC.
In 2008, over 1500 secondary students from 65 Alabama high schools competed. The “Best in Show” One Act, from the state competition (“Forbidden Broadway” by Huntsville High School) represented Alabama at the 2009 Southeastern Theatre Conference in March, 2009 and took top honors at that regional event.
The 2009 Trumbauer Manual tells you everything you need to know about this year’s festival, including district contacts, registration and deadlines.
